The 2005 Pakistan Earthquake was one of the most devastating natural disasters in history, leaving millions homeless, injured, and traumatized. In response, Medical Aid to Pakistan stepped up to provide critical support to those affected, focusing on long-term rehabilitation and healthcare initiatives.

Our Response to the Earthquake

1. SCIPPER Appeal (Spinal Cord Injury Project for Pakistan Earthquake Rehabilitation)

  • Over 6,000 spinal cord injury patients survived the earthquake, many of whom were women and children.
  • Injuries primarily affected the thoracic and lumbosacral spinal cord, with some patients requiring spinal stabilisation surgeries and others developing quadriplegia.
  • In addition to physical injuries, survivors faced severe psychosocial trauma.
  • Medical Aid to Pakistan allocated £6,000 to the Spinal Injury Unit in Kashmir through the Hashoo Foundation.
  • A team of doctors from the USA, led by Dr. Zeba Vanek, a neurologist with a special interest in movement disorders, visited Pakistan to help set up the SCIPPER project.

2. Cure2Children (C2C)

  • Medical Aid to Pakistan sent £8,000 to Cure2Children, a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the care of children with cancer and blood disorders in developing countries.
  • C2C focuses on training local healthcare professionals, providing equipment and supplies, and offering financial and psychological support to families to prevent treatment abandonment.
  • Their goal is to promote self-reliance and reduce the need for families to seek treatment abroad.

The Impact of the 2005 Earthquake

  • The earthquake is believed to be the 14th most destructive earthquake of all time.
  • It left an estimated 3.3 million people homeless and directly affected 8 million people.
  • The confirmed death toll was 74,698, with an estimated $5 billion (300 billion Pakistani rupees) in damages.

The 2005 earthquake highlighted the urgent need for sustainable healthcare and rehabilitation services in Pakistan. Medical Aid to Pakistan remains committed to:

  • Providing life-saving medical equipment and treatment to those in need.
  • Supporting long-term rehabilitation projects for survivors of disasters.
